Beijing 2008
VisitBritain Leads Britain to Beijing

One of the key milestones on the road to 2012 is the Beijing Games in 2008. The pivotal moment here is the Handover at the Closing Ceremony when London officially takes on the mantle as host city of the next Summer Games.

VisitBritain will be laying the foundations this summer to ensure UK-wide benefits are secured from the 2012 Games, promoting Britain as a destination for watching and participating in sport at all levels. VisitBritain and its partners’ activities will help the UK’s nations and regions showcase their areas and promote sports venues, facilities and events to an influential audience of Olympic committees and sports federations.

In total there are four major strands to VisitBritain's Beijing 2008 programme:

  1. To showcase Britain’s sporting assets, VisitBritain is running two programmes - one during the Olympic Games and the other during the Paralympic Games - for representatives from the nations and regions to promote their sports facilities and venues as pre-Games training camps. Delegates will spend time in Beijing and Macau to gain an understanding of the economic benefit of training camps, as well as the requirements of athletes. They will participate in receptions to launch the London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp prospectus and will showcase Britain's sporting venues and facilities to senior members of National Olympic Committees, National Paralympic Committees and the international federations of the 26 sports participating in the 2012 Games.

  2. VisitBritain will also be running a targeted relationship-building programme in partnership with Visit London focussing on all of the key Olympic stakeholders who will be in Beijing during the Games, including members of the Olympic Family, sponsors, broadcasters and media from key markets.

  3. VisitBritain will be supporting London’s presence at the Beijing Games and providing a key contribution towards the Handover celebration at London House.

  4. In addition to this VisitBritain is involved in six events over the course of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in partnership with LOCOG, Visit London and public diplomacy partners to target a variety of audiences, including the Olympic Family and Chinese travel trade & media.
