| HEIGHTENED STATE OF SECURITY AT UK AIRPORTS | |
Heightened security measures remain in place at UK airports following Thursday’s police counter-terrorism action. VisitBritain continues to monitor the situation closely and has implemented its usual responses to ensure that the tourism industry is kept as up to date with developments as possible. VisitBritain has conducted an initial global assessment through our offices in 36 countries around the world designed to understand the potential effects on travel to the UK. This reveals a picture of considerable short-term disruption, but currently suggests limited impact on regular seasonal visitor flows. We are in constant contact with Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and, through our overseas offices, Embassies and Consulates in all the markets in which we operate. We continue to liaise with the British Airports Authority, Home Office, Cabinet Office and Civil Contingencies Secretariat as necessary and will communicate to the industry via the tourism industry’s established and effective Tourism Industry Emergency Response Group (TIER). Airports are trying to operate as normally as possible. However, delays will be inevitable and passengers are being asked to allow extra time and ensure that other than the limited number of permitted items, all their belongings are placed in their hold items and checked in. Passengers are being advised to check with their operators for the latest information for their particular flights. This is an emerging situation which we will continue to monitor in order to keep you informed. As part of our ongoing impact assessment, we invite tourism industry members to share their experiences or views with VisitBritain on industry.relations@visitbritain.com Information for air travelers provided has been issued by the Department for Transport (link to www.dft.gov.uk).
