| Smoking Ban in England on July 1st | |
A smoking ban in all enclosed areas across England is due to come into force on 1 July this year. The ban, which will impose strict non-smoking rules in all bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants, will not extend to hotel rooms and other private accommodation. Failure to display no-smoking signs could lead to on the spot fines of £200 and failing to stop someone smoking in a banned area of your property may lead to a fine of £2,500. If you currently allow smoking in a restaurant or eating area attached to your property, now is the time to think about outside smoking areas. Planning and budgeting for the inevitable ban is a sensible move and will lead customers to feel welcome once the ban is in place. It is, however, important to bear in mind that noise levels will increase if customers are outside the property and if your business operates from a listed building, it may be difficult to obtain planning permission for a shelter.
